Transportation in Libya

Your complete guide to getting around Libya - from airport transfers to local transport

Getting Around Libya

Libya's transport scene is dominated by shared taxis and inter-city coaches, cheap, ubiquitous, and the way most Libyans move. Between major towns the coaches are frequent and air-conditioned, while within cities the white-and-blue shared taxis (called *louage*) run fixed routes for a fraction of a private taxi fare. Private taxis exist but count as a splurge. Always insist the meter is running or settle the fare before you set off. Rental cars are available. Yet fuel queues and checkpoints make them more hassle than help for first-timers. Arriving at Tripoli Mitiga International, skip the unofficial touts outside baggage claim, they'll quote inflated "tourist" rates. Head to the clearly marked official taxi rank just beyond the exit doors. These drivers queue in order and will use the meter if you ask. If you're heading downtown and it's daylight, a shared *louage* from the nearby station is the cheapest option. But with luggage the official taxi is worth the extra comfort.

Quick Transportation Tips

Use the widely available Al-Madar and Libyana mobile apps to book inter-city taxis between Tripoli and Benghazi.

Shared louage minibuses depart from Tripoli's Martyrs Square station when full, typically early morning.

Carry cash in Libyan dinars as most local transport operators don't accept cards.

Private drivers at Tripoli Airport arrivals offer fixed-price rides to city center, negotiate before entering vehicle.
